An introduction to a lifetime career through her passion of athletics and caring for her elders, Victoria Smith earns her Masters in Gerontology in May of 2015. With the never ending support of her family, boyfriend, and horse, Victoria took advantage of the opportunity offered to see a glimpse of how life would be once earning her masters degree. Overcoming her biggest struggle of self doubt is exactly what makes Victoria rise above the rest in her success. “I always had people tell me I wasn’t smart enough to go to college, I wasn’t fast enough for scholarships, and I wasn’t talented enough to show horses,” Victoria expresses. Accomplishing all three Victoria proved everyone wrong that ever doubted her.
Shortly before her graduation date Victoria landed a job as the Assisted Living Director at Sunrise Senior Living. The hands on experience to the care of gerontology as well as the aging services and management side has opened her eyes to this field of care. “Over seeing 70 residents and 40 employees is a chore in themselves,”Victoria explains. “Then throw family members in the mix and your strength is truly tested. As a passionate and loving individual I am able to provide the most dignified care to my residents, run an assisted living department smoothly, and reassure the family members their loved ones are in the best hands of care in town.”
Choosing a career path can cause stress and delay the pursuit. According to Deloitte’s Shift Index survey, 80% of people are dissatisfied with their jobs. For Victoria, she chose to follow her passion for caring for others. “It is so rewarding to link together my education and my passion and work with elders to extend their quality of life,” says Victoria. “The driving factor of my geriatric care passion is to make a difference in each and every older adults life.”
In the end her ultimate goal is to open her own facility to assist retired athletes in reestablishing their mental and physical health. As Victoria comes to an end with her college education she now starts a new beginning and continues her pursuit to her own happiness by bringing a smile to the faces of those she cares for. A win-win for Master Victoria!
P.S. Happy Birthday!!!
